It just seems so appropriate that I would discover and enjoy this song right at the end of 2009.

This is Hypernova, a rock band originating from Iran (who I believe now reside in the States). While I don’t usually advocate breaking the law, these guys are pretty bold in that they (illegally) worked the underground rock scene in Tehran long before they became known internationally.
There isn’t much I can write that can do these guys justice. Check out the music video below (which was done in stop motion at 10 fps) and hit their MySpace page if you wanna listen to some of their other songs as well.

I discover most indie artists by proxy of another indie artist that I already follow (on Twitter, Facebook, etc.). In this particular instance, I learned about Paul Dateh through a small collaboration he did with David Choi. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably saw me tweet about this more times than you cared to read about it.
Paul’s basically a classical violinist gone rogue. When he got to college, he dropped 14 years of classical training so he could dive head first into the realms of jazz studies. I could ride on the waves of his smooth violin-playing skillz all day. Srsly.

I don’t keep a whole lot of hip-hop or rap in my music library–there are just too many mediocre or unoriginal artists out there. Seriously, I can only deal with so many songs about booty, bling, and escalades.
I want raw authenticity in the music I listen to, and the mainstream just doesn’t deliver.
Meet Magnetic North, “the hip hop duo known for moving your body as well as your synapses. Respected nation-wide for their soul scorching lyrics and innovative melodies, Direct & Theresa Vu have turned heads from rap superstar Nelly to renowned civil rights activist Yuri Kochiyama.”
Music video below. WATCH IT BEFORE I GET ALL GANGSTA ON YO ARSE.

Meet The Waiting Kind. Discovered these guys through a forum that I frequent. I pre-ordered their CD the same day I saw this. Many thanks to Marcus Hackler for posting this video!
